Post Making Ubuntu Studio General Purpose
on: October 17, 2009, 01:03

I’ve been tinkering with Ubuntu Studio and understand it’s main purpose is multimedia oriented. However I am looking for tips to make it more general purpose so I can get other tasks done without rebooting to a different distro/kernel. Is there a way to get the RT kernel to play nice with the proprietary video drivers (ATI)? One thing I’ve noticed is that 3D acceleration is really choppy, and even 2D acceleration seems to suffer with the RT Kernel. Is this a known issue or is it just me?

I must mention I am using Ubuntu 9.10 beta with the studio packages installed on top. I know beta releases are supposed to have issues, but I had the same issues back when I tried 8.04 Studio.

Hey John,

Thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate it. I haven’t written in a while simply because things have been really busy on my side - with the job and recent marriage - but I hope to get back into it soon. Until then, feel free to ask questions and I’m sure I’ll be able to help you.

Later,
Brian

Hey John,

Sorry about the previous reply it was meant for your other forum post but I got confused when flipping through the Firefox tabs :-).

As far as I know ATI isn’t as well supported in Linux as Nvidia is at least that is how it use to be. It’s been a while but I think there’s a way to install video-card specific drivers. Go to System on the start bar go to Administartion and then to Restricted Drivers Manager. You should see an ATi driver there, if not you need to find out how to get it there cos I can’t remember. Make sure that this is activated and in use and it should help your performance.

Hope that helps in some way or the other.

Later,
Brian
