With all the discussions around the future of ubuntu studio, I’ve been thinking: What software/packages should be included to make the ultimate linux audio studio distribution?

Also, what software needs to improved?

Here’s Mike the Tike’s list:
* Ardour (the one and only)
* Hydrogen
* Audacity (only because its quick and dirty)
* QtJackCtl
* Patchage (this guy could use a bit of work)
* JaMin

Jconv with a proper gui. An app that’s realtime like the WIndows apps. I’m a guitarist and I use the preamp out of my little practise amp into my soundcard through Impulse Response files and I get some really nice sounds.

Windows has tons of apps that load IR files like keFIR, Voxengo Boogex, sIR, etc. Jconv is better than all of them IMO but it cannot load files in real-time(ie; choose the right cab/amp IR files for the guitar on a fly.)

I’m in an appartment so I need that… Haven’t found a software amp sim under linux that compares to free vsts out there but I don’t like using vsts so I use the set up I mentioned earlier.

So part of a perfect DAW distro should be to have some good amp sims and a gui with realtime abilities for jconv. The reverb IR files out there are awesome too.

Thanks for the input. That sounds really cool. I haven’t used it myself, but will definitely take a look at it.

I think that it will be very interesting to add tons of selected presets for LADSPA plugins, guitarix, rakarrack, etc…

It is very useful for linux music newbies to find an easy way to get a great sound. Sometimes it is very frustrating use the excellent piece of software we have and don’t get a nice sound.

Maybe rakarrack is an exception but if you have more you enjoy more.

And for Brian, good luck with your forum adventure!

Hey Peregil,

Thanks for the feedback. Good point – I also find it frustrating not having presets for plugins. They really help to get a feel for the effect.

Brian

How about good documentation?

I am a musician and a linux user, but not a sound engineer. I have Ubuntu studio, but I am totally mystified on how to use it, get sound to come out of Jack, etc. Plus it seems that the various audio subsystems are fighting each other. I’m just looking for the “dummies” version – how to go from A (booting the sytem) to B (simple recording, midi, mixing and such).

Hey Stranik,

I can understand your situation – moving to Linux audio can be quite daunting and quite frustrating too. This is why I started Brian’s Bedroom – Linux audio has a lot of potential but without help from the community, this potential could just be wasted.

Obviously the guide you are talking about would be flippin useful. However, these types of guides are a mission to write and even more of a mission to maintain. But I can tell you that a lot of the basics have been covered, just not all in one place. Below are a couple of links that might be useful:

I hope this helps, but if you’re still struggling with something. Let us know and we’ll do what we can to help.
