Jazz and Blues Hydrogen Drum Beat Templates
Why do guitarists put drumsticks on the dash of their cars?
… So they can park in the Handicapped spot!
Lame, I know – but I kind of started a theme here with these drum beat templates and I didn’t want to let you down. So seriously now… I’ve been working on another beat template which uses Jazz and Blues rhythms. But I tried something new this time – I noticed that in my beat templates a lot of the beats had similar characteristics and it made things really bulky. So with this template, I’ve made patterns for both the right and left hands as well as for the right foot (i.e. the kick drum). This means that you are able to make many different beats by just playing any R-hand, L-hand and R-foot combination simultaneously. Follow the links below to download these new templates:
The actual template: BriansBeatsJAZZ.h2song.zip (4 kB)
Note: These songs require the YamahaVintageKit available for download from here.
A MP3 sample of the template: JAZZBeatsExample.mp3 (556 kB)
I thought that would be pretty cool, but check it out and let me know what you think by leaving a comment… if you prefer the older style of beat templates, I would be happy to make it like that again.

Hey Mudfly,
Thanks for the feedback. So I take it that you think it is a good way of doing beat templates?

Good tips, takes a bit more time and planning to put together, but it is deff worth it due to the flexibility it allows. Hydrogen is a great tool and a great example of the potential in all Linux audio software.

Hey Dana,
Thanks for the feedback. Do you reckon this way of doing beat templates is better than my older methods? Would it be worth it to convert my beat templates to this format?

I’m so glad I found your blog Brian. I am a complete novice when it comes to Hydrogen but I am hoping to start a large recording project very soon and dreading having to boot into Windows to do it! All the information you have provided here has given me the confidence to push on and see what I can come up with.
Thanks for your help,
Stuart

Haha, If I get the 73 Toronado I’m looking at, I’ll have drumsticks on the dashboard for sure. You asked a question which I will try to answer as a guitarist who tries to keep a pair of drumsticks around. I suggest you not waste a successful old method for a new one, if you already have the files which represent both methods. Just add a suffix to their names. Some of us think like drummers (rudiments and communities of autonomous limbs), and some of us think like dancers with guitars, keyboards, microphones and the like.
I certainly appreciate a drummer contributing jazz rhythms from a viewpoint which recognizes the physicality involved. It’s a far cry from the lies and damn lies I have pulled off in some of my recordings, but then I’ve become accustomed to some folks looking at me as if I have three and a half arms.
If you’re feeling adventurous, it would be cool to have you building out a catalog of rhythms which reflect other traditions such as latin, zydeco, be-bop, etc; returning us all to a framework which is conversant in these traditions. If there’s anyone who might do it…that’s one of the reasons you’ve been dead-center in my browser toolbar for a few years now.

Hey Morley,
Thanks for the in-depth feedback, I really appreciate it. You have a point and the last thing I want to do is make things complicated. I felt that this approach works specifically well for the Jazz beats because Jazz is all about flexibility and new ideas. However, the beats you mentioned like Latin are far more rigid and would lean towards set patterns. If I get the time, I would really like to create some more templates but I have been pretty tied down of late. Maybe the best way forward is to create two types of templates one which uses combinations of limb patterns and one that just gives you the beat plain-and-simple.
Will definitely give it some thought. Thanks agin for the input.
